ICC should create a window for IPL: VettoriApril 8th, 2008 - 10:26 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, April 8 (IANS) The International Cricket Council should create a six-week window in its calendar for the Indian Premier League (IPL) that will ensure the participation of all star players without any hiccups, believes New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori. “If it is feasible to change the Futures Tours Programme (FTP), why not? Making people available for six weeks will help. It would be easier for the players if there is a window of six weeks for the IPL,” said Vettori, who joined his team Delhi Daredevils Tuesday.
“I hope that BCCI and ICC can sit together and work something out so that players can represent their country and can play in IPL as well,” he added.
New Zealand will travel to England next month and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has given a green signal to its cricketers playing in IPL to skip their initial warm-up matches on England tour so that they can take part in the inaugural Twenty20 competition starting April 18.
Vettori said that losing some of New Zealand’s key players to the rebel Indian Cricket League has weakened the national team.
“It is unfortunate that we have lost players. New Zealand is a small nation and some 8 to 9 guys have joined ICL. The money offered is big and it is very difficult for us to cope with such loss,” said the Kiwi captain.
He also said that the cash-rich IPL is an interesting and unique concept and he is happy to be associated with it.
“It is very exciting for overseas players to play in IPL. There are a lot of young Indian guys and international players like McGrath.”
The Kiwi off-spinner said that slow bowlers will have an important role to play in the Twenty20 format of the game.
“It is easier for the spinners in this version of the game because you know that batsmen will always be aggressive against you. You have good insight of what the guy at the other end is up to. Spinners were very successful in T20 World Cup and we have got a good role to play,” said Vettori.
Asked about playing for the Daredevils, Vettori, said: “There are players like Sehwag, Gambhir, McGrath and A.B. de Villiers. It will be exciting to play alongside them. Hopefully I can pass on my knowledge to the younger guys.”
