ICC says Sri Lanka’s new World Cup stadiums on track
June 8th, 2010 - 2:01 pm ICT by ANIColombo, June 8(ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) has said that new Sri Lankan stadiums for next year’s World Cup are on track to host international games before the start of the tournament.
Sri Lanka, which is co-hosting the tournament with India and Bangladesh, will stage 12 games at Colombo’s Premadasa stadium and at the newly built stadiums in Kandy and Hambantota.
“With the exception of the Premadasa stadium, others are on track to play a few first-class and international matches before the tournament starts next February,” The News quoted Eugene van Vuuren, ICC’s Structural Engineer, as saying.
ICC Pitch Consultant Andy Atkinson, who is on a three-day inspection trip, said that despite Sri Lanka Cricket spending around eight million dollars to renovate and re-lay the pitch at the Premadasa stadium, it is a worry for him.
“I would like to get some games in to try out the pitch conditions before the big show next year,” Atkinson added.
The other two stadiums to hold the games are Pallekele stadium in Kandy and Suriyawewa Stadium in Hambantota. (ANI)
