ICC rejects PCB’s explanation over non-selection of rookie pacer Irfan
April 20th, 2010 - 6:13 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, Apr.20 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rejected the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) explanation over rookie pacer Mohammed Irfan’s non-selection in the 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Championship in the West Indies.
The PCB had said that Irfan was not named in the list of 30-probables sent to the (ICC), so he can not be selected in the final 15.
However, a statement issued by the ICC today clarified that it was not necessary for a player to be included in the provisional 30-man squad for the tournament to play in it.”A player does not have to be in the provisional 30-man squad to be drafted into the final squad. The PCB did not request Irfan as a replacement. The two replacements requested are Sami and Rehman,” PakPasssion.net quoted the statement, as saying.
Confusion prevailed in the PCB over Irfan’s selection in the national squad. Chief Selector Mohsin Khan, coach Waqar Younis and T20 captain Shahid Afridi had earlier said that Irfan has been selected for the West Indies bound team, but a statement released by the PCB later denied the left-arm pacer’s selection.
On Sunday, chief selector Mohsin Khan had said that the PCB chief Ijaz Butt has confirmed both Mohammed Sami and Irfan’s name as replacements for injured Umar Gul and Yasir Aarafat.
However, minutes after Khan’s remarks, the PCB released a press statement saying Butt is still to give his nod to replacements.
“Sami and spinner (Abdul) Rehman will replace Umar and Yasir and both the names have been approved by the PCB chairman,” a PCB statement clarified later. (ANI)
