ICC approves Morgan as Pietersen’s replacement
March 8th, 2011 - 1:41 pm ICT by ANIChennai, Mar 8 (ANI): The International Cricket Council has approved Eoin Morgan as a replacement player for England’s star batsman Kevin Pietersen, who will miss the rest of the World Cup and return home to undergo a hernia operation.
Morgan is due to arrive in Chittagong on Tuesday and head coach Andy Flower expects him to slot into the middle order for Friday’s match against Bangladesh.
Morgan, a 24-year-old middle-order batsman, has played 38 ODIs for England, scoring 1160 runs at an average of 40.
“Eoin Morgan is an exciting cricketer. It’s going to be good to have him back,” England coach Andy Flower told Sky Sports.
Ravi Bopara, Morgan’s replacement, made a man-of-the-match winning 60 against South Africa in Chennai.
But both Morgan and Bopara are naturally middle-order batsmen, which leaves Flower needing a new opening partner for England captain Andrew Strauss. (ANI)
