I would pick Panesar ahead of Swann: WarneFebruary 28th, 2009 - 9:07 pm ICT by IANS
London, Feb 28 (IANS) Australian spin legend Shane Warne is disappointed with the progress of England left-arm spinner Monty Panesar but said he would still pick him ahead of Graeme Swann.
“Monty has the ability to come out and take five-for on the last day and win you the Test. But he needs to adapt to the conditions better. I haven’t seen an improvement in Monty over a period of time, I’ve just seen him bowl the same all the time.”
Warne, feels Panesar needs to work on his bowling to be reckoned a top class spinner.
“I’m disappointed with where Monty’s at, as he’s got the attributes of being a wonderful spin bowler,” he said.
“You need to bowl more over-spin in some conditions, you need to bowl more side-spin in others. There are all different ways to do things in different conditions, but Monty just bowls the same way all the time and hopes that will be good enough.”
The 26-year-old Northamptonshire spinner came into the limelight three years ago and impressed everyone with his ability to dismiss top batsman and run through teams when it mattered most.
However, his form has dipped in recent times and Graeme Swann is currently the number one spinner on the tour of the West Indies with Panesar relegated to 12th man duties.
“I think Swann has done pretty well, he’s a handy number eight or nine batter as well, but I think Monty has the ability to take a five-for on the last day and win you the Test.
