Pune, Oct 20 (IANS) Two days before their first match in the I-League, Pune FC suffered a huge set back as their star goalkeepeer Subrata Paul was ruled for for three months due to injury.

The 24-year-old Paul, who was stretchered out mid-way into the first half of Pune FC’s Federation Cup encounter against East Bengal in Kolkata after a collision with the opposition striker, will need surgery to his left knee.

Paul suffered an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) rupture after falling, which turned out to be serious.

“The injury is unfortunate. I want to be back as soon as possible. And believe me sitting out is not easy. I am always with the team, even when I am out due to injury. I will cheer the team from the outside and wish that all you fans join me,” said Paul.

Shahinlal Meloly and third choice Amrinder Singh are the options for Pune FC coach Derrick Perreira.

Pune FC Head Operations, Chirag Tanna said Paul’s injury is a big blow for the team.

“However, medically it is much serious and involves an operation. Paul’s absence will be felt but we do have the others capable of standing up to the occasion. Now is the time for the youngsters to stand up and get noticed,” he said.
