Hughes hammers way back into national reckoning
December 20th, 2009 - 1:56 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )Sydney, Dec. 20 (ANI): A brilliant 122 in the Sheffield Shield clash against Victoria could result in a Test recall for NSW opener Phillip Hughes.
NSW declared their first innings closed on 8-390 late on the second day of play at Newcastle No.1 Sports Ground yesterday.
With Ricky Ponting in doubt for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan because of an elbow injury, Hughes delighted the crowd.
Hughes cruised to a 142-ball hundred and was finally out caught at backward square leg off the bowling of Jon Holland after hitting 13 fours and two sixes from 179 deliveries.
The 21-year-old, who averages 52.44 in five Tests, has scored 381 runs at 47.62 in five Shield matches since he was dumped from the Test side midway through the Ashes tour.
With Test selector Jamie Cox looking on, Hughes played with great confidence, giving three difficult chances on 77, 109 and 113.
Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Hughes selected, with makeshift opener Shane Watson dropping to No.3 and Simon Katich opening with Hughes. (ANI)
