Melbourne, July 3 (IANS) Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has criticised the decision to reject John Howard’s nomination for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) vice-presidency, calling the move a “shame”.
The strong African and Asian blocs in the ICC, after Wednesday’s executive meeting in Singapore, dismissed the former Australian Prime Minister’s candidature for the top job leaving Australia and New Zealand seething.

Waugh condemned the move at Lord’s Friday.

“I think it was a real shame, I think he would have been fantastic for world cricket. He has a passion for the game and he is a very good diplomat,” Waugh was quoted as saying in The Age.

“I think he would have had the ability to bring people and boards together and I think it was a mistake not appointing him.”

Howard has not withdrawn as Australia and New Zealand’s nomination for the presidency.

The two nations had jointly nominated Howard for the ICC vice-presidency. Under ICC rules, the vice-president becomes president after two years, with the term for the rotational position due to start in 2012.

The ICC invited Australia and New Zealand to nominate a new candidate by the end of August.
