Hopes staying on with Daredevils despite father’s illness
April 16th, 2011 - 8:08 pm ICT by IANSNavi Mumbai, April 16 (IANS) Delhi Daredevils all-rounder James Hopes has decided to stay on with his team despite his father being diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Hopes said his father has asked him to play the full Indian Premier League season (IPL).
“My dad has asked me stay on and play the full IPL and be with my team,” said Hopes.
“Yes, it is true that he has been diagnosed with it (cancer). But he is in great spirits. My mum is there with him and my older brother, John, is also there in Brisbane,” Hopes was quoted as saying on Delhi Daredevils website.
“There was never any question of my going back to Australia to be with him. I have been speaking to my Dad and family after I got to know Wednesday. He (Dad) laughed and said, ‘I will kill you if you come back. I want you to play and do well.’ I don’t know where those reports of the possibility of my going back came from,” said the Australian.
Hopes has played 84 one-dayers for Australia and narrowly missed out on making the 2011 World Cup squad.
“The doctors have been very positive. They feel the diagnosis has happened at the right time and he will be undergoing surgery soon. Things are in control said the doctors.”
On the performance of the Delhi Daredevils who have lost two matches, Hopes said: “These are early days. We have a good, solid team of young and experienced players.”
