Hope Murali continues his fairytale endings in Mumbai: Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara Colombo, March 30 (IANS) Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara said it was an emotional moment for the team as Muttiah Muralitharan played his last ODI at home and hoped the spin king continues his “fairytale” endings and finishes on the winning side of the World Cup.

Sangakkara also said the Muralitharan has the knack of scripting fairytale endings as he did against New Zealand by taking a wicket off his last ball at home, when he dismissed Scoot Styris, quite like the way he got his 800th Test wicket in his last match.

“It is quite amazing you know, when you think why he has such a fairytale ending. Murali, you know, is a honest guy. He has no ego. He is a good human being and a great team man. He talks a lot in the dressing room and he peps everyone up. He is a good guy and that’s why good things happen to him. Hopefully he will have a great match in Mumbai,” a visibly emotional Sangakkara said after his side’s five wicket victory against New Zealand in the semifinal Tuesday.

“It was an emotional moment for us, for the team and for the crowd with Murali playing his last match at home. When the magnitude of the occasion hits you, it is overwhelming. It is then you realise that it is the last time you are playing at home with the world’s best bowler.”

Sangakkara said they wanted to give a fitting farewell to the spin king, who took a lap of honour after the victory.

“We really wanted to give him a good send-off. Murali is the icon of Sri Lanka, on the field, off the field.”

Sangakkara said Muralitharan was padded up in case they had lost another wicket.

“Yes, he was padded up. We needed just two hits and Murali is very good at that. So we thought if a wicket falls, he can got and hit those runs. But it was not needed and when the winning runs came we just enjoyed the moment.”
