Hiddink to coach Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala
December 21st, 2011 - 9:13 pm ICT by IANSThe Hague (Netherlands), Dec 21 (IANS) Guus Hiddink will take over as coach of Russian football club Anzhi Makhachkala in January, Dutch football magazine Voetbal International reported Wednesday.
Hiddink, who is currently holidaying in Africa, agreed on a contract for six months and an option for another season. He was fired as coach of the Turkish national team in November after Turkey was eliminated from Euro 2012.
Hiddink’s last assignment as club coach was as caretaker at Chelsea in 2009. The 65-year-old Dutchman had also managed PSV Eindhoven, Fenerbahce, Valencia, Real Madrid, Real Betis and the national teams of the Netherlands, South Korea, Australia and Russia.
Anzhi Makhachkala is currently ranked seventh in the Russian Premier League, which will resume from the winter break in the beginning of March. The club is based in Makhachkala, capital of the Republic of Dagestan, but the training ground of the club is located in Moscow.
In January 2011, Anzhi was purchased by billionaire Suleyman Kerimov and he invested millions of Euros in high profile players like Brazilian Roberto Carlos, Moroccan Mbark Boussoufa, Hungarian Balazs Dzsudzsak and Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o.
After coach Gadzhi Gadzhiyev was fired in September, Robert Carlos took over as player/coach, followed by caretaker Andrei Gordeyev.
