Nov.30, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Al Groh, head coach of the football team of University of Virginia has been fired on Sunday after his team lost to rival Virginia Tech in the last game of the season, which was held at Charlottesville. The 65 year old coach was dismissed following the series of disappointing performances that his team was showcasing in the successive games of the season.
Reportedly, the team officials were not satisfied with the Groh’s inability to bring the team together and and make them play their best to ensure the team’s victory. Moreover, the team’s humiliating defeat against arch rivals acted as the final nail to the coffin and resulted in the dismissal of the veteran coach. However, Groh’s contract with the University of Virginia is valid for two more years as a result of which he has reportedly been paid $4.33 million as a buyout. Supposedly, the coach also held a press conference shortly after the termination to express his side of the story.
Groh had undertaken the responsibilities as the head coach of the team in the year 2000, after replacing the legendary George Welsh. At the same time, the dismissal of the multiple Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year award winner did not come as a surprise to the players of the team. While reacting to the dismissal, wide receiver Jared Green emphasized that the veteran coach had over the years played a pivotal role in helping the players grow. Moreover, the wide receiver also implied that although the entire team is immensely grateful to the coach, they have to move on and play their best game.
