Haryana sports nurseries training 1,000 players
August 17th, 2010 - 10:36 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Aug 17 (IANS) The Haryana government has set up 46 sports nurseries across the state where nearly 1,000 players were being trained in various sporting disciplines, chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said Tuesday.
Hooda said that the players being trained at these sports nurseries are being provided free hostel, food and training facilities.
He was addressing a gathering at Moti Lal Nehru Sports School at Rai in Sonepat district, 200 km from here, Tuesday after dedicating an Astroturf at the hockey stadium.
Detailing the initiatives taken by the Haryana government to promote sports in the state, Hooda said that 1,606 promising players have been identified from the state as part of the sports talent hunt programme. These players are being given scholarships and training.
Hooda said that 171 stadia are being constructed at village, block and district levels to promote sporting culture among youth, and 69 of them have already been completed.
Leading international boxers, like world champion Vijender Singh, and national women hockey team members from the state have excelled at the international level.
