New Delhi, Oct 27 (IANS) As Indian team went through an extended practice session at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium here Monday, question mark loomed on off-spinner Harbhajan Singh’s appearance in the third Test that begins Wednesday.Harbhajan, who injured his toe in the Mohali Test, did not ball much at nets Monday. Instead, he was seen spending a good amount of time polishing his batting skills with Sachin Tendulkar at the other end doling out tips on how to drive the ball.
Indian coach Gary Kirsten, too, confirmed at the press meet that they are keeping a close watch on the off-spinner’s injury.
“I am not sure whether he will play. We will wait and see. He picked the injury on the last day of the Mohali Test. But we still have a day to go. Hopefully he will be there,” said Kirsten.
Kirsten though ruled out playing three spinners. With skipper Anil Kumble, who sat out in the previous Test because of a shoulder injury, looking fit to return, Amit Mishra will warm the bench.
However, Mishra, who made successful Test debut in Mohali, might get a look in if Harbhajan fails to pass the fitness test.
“If Kumble is fit, then he will be in the team as he is the captain. He is looking good and I am happy the way the things have progressed,” Kirsten said.
Harbhajan’s sitting out would be music to Australia. The off-spinner not only has the knack of getting into the skin of the Aussies but also boast of an impressive record against them, taking 72 wickets in 13 matches, his best against any Test team.
Harbhajan has had a good run in in Kotla, gleaning 18 scalps in four Tests.
