Gandhinagar, April 3 (IANS) Gujarat exploded with joy in a burst of firecrackers lighting up the sky Saturday night as the winning run came up in far off Mumbai giving India the cricket World Cup.
Governor Kamla Beniwal and Chief Minister Narendra Modi felicitated the indian team on their splendid victory.
The deafening sounds of bursting crackers built up to a crescendo as Ahmedabad celebrated the victory with hundreds of people pouring into the street immediately after the match and join an impromptu dance.
Reports of massive celebrations also came from various cities and towns of Gujarat.
Gujarat being a dry state, it were the ubiquitious water pouches that substituted for champagne on Ahmedabad’s main thoroughfare, said TV journalist Abhishek Kapoor, who was busy catching the action.
Expectations have been running high over the week with people in residential societies in Ahmedabad putting up giant screens to watch the match together.
“It was the spirit of India as over a thousand such screens popped up overnight in Ahmedabad alone and people watched the final,” Kartik Shukla, a corporate executive, told IANS.
Jayshri Vyas, a homemaker in Rajkot said it was a proud moment for the country.
