Ground to be named after Shane Warne
November 12th, 2010 - 1:12 pm ICT by ANISydney, Nov 12 (ANI): Australian bowling legend Shane Warne will get a ground named after him in Melbourne.
Melbourne’s heritage-listed Junction Oval would be renamed the Shane Warne Oval under a proposed multi-million dollar renovation.
Almost 20 million dollars would be spent redeveloping the oval into a 5000-seat boutique stadium and indoor sports and training centre if a Labor government was re-elected, Victorian Premier John Brumby said on Friday.
A major part of the works would be providing a venue that could host first-class domestic cricket matches, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The picturesque Junction Oval (officially, the St Kilda Cricket Ground) is located in St Kilda, near Port Phillip Bay, and has a proud history that includes hosting Victorian Football League grand finals and Sheffield Shield cricket finals.
Naming the ground after the legendary Australian and Victorian cricketer Warne would also make sense as he once played for the St Kilda Cricket Club.
Warne said in a media release he was happy with the proposal.
“Today’s commitment by the premier will not only ensure Victoria will be well represented in our national team but is great news for junior and community cricketers across Victoria,” he said. (ANI)
