Greg McMackin, the football coach for Hawaii has again created controversy through his remarks. The occasion was that of Western Athletic Conference Preview when he used certain demeaning words against the Notre Dame. Those unprintable words are considered to be demeaning and having ‘homosexual’ connotations. He had mocked one of the ritual dances which the Notre Dame team performed and kind of implied that it looked like a dance for homosexuals.

As soon as he uttered the phrase he realized what he had done and pleaded profusely with the media and reporters present there not to publicize the matter. He said, “Just please……cover for me….please cover for me on that, too — right Karl [Journalist]. i’ll deny it. Anything else?” He went on to add, ” I know there are a couple of you that know me. I’m very competitive person. I think I told you guys that was my worst loss in my 40-year career at Notre Dame. It ticks me off that I said that because Notre Dame played a great ballgame.”

Karl Benson, who is the WAC commissioner mentioned in this context that actions which might be taken regarding this could be be taken first by the University of Hawaii as it was a “University of Hawaii issue.” The University of Hawaii on the other hand seemed non committal on this as Jim Donvan, the athletic director of the university stressing on the fact that, “Part of apologizing is making amends.” McMackin had earlier come out with an official statement of apology which stated his sincere apology for the demeaning and inappropriate phrase he had used.
