Greg Chappell eyeing Cricket Australia’s first ‘fulltime selector’ job
August 17th, 2010 - 12:50 pm ICT by ANISydney, Aug 17(ANI): Over two decades after resigning as a Test selector, former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell is poised for a re-appearance as Cricket Australia’s first fulltime selector.
The former Indian coach will be interviewed this week for the newly created position, which includes the role as national talent scout and a media spokesman for the selection panel.
Chappell is currently coach of the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, and his vast experience should make him the frontrunner for the new role, The Courier Mail reports.
Cricket Australia manager Michael Brown said that the new role has been designed to help professionalise the panel.
“The creation of the position is a wonderful step for the professionalism of Australian cricket,” Brown said.
“We expect this person to play a key role in managing senior Australian teams and being available to communicate with current players and those who have been identified as potential Australian players,” he added.
Since his retirement as a player in 1984, Chappell has pursued various business and media interests, and has been a selector for national and Queensland teams.
In 1988, Chappell had quit the selection panel and cut all links to cricket after becoming disillusioned with the “archaic structure and mentality” of the then cricket administration.
He was appointed Indian team’s coach on a two-year contract in 2005, but a series of controversies and personality clashes, combined with India’s poor performance at the 2007 World Cup led to his resignation from the position in April 2007. (ANI)
