Green Bay Packers win Super Bowl 31-25 over Pittsburgh Steelers
February 7th, 2011 - 2:10 pm ICT by BNO NewsARLINGTON, TEXAS (BNO NEWS) — The Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 to win Super Bowl XLV on Sunday, NFL’s official website said.
Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 24 of his 39 passes for 304 yards, including three touchdown passes and no interceptions. The Packers had even more to celebrate as they worked out the victory without key players such as cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Sam Shields, as well as the team’s top receiver Donald Driver.
Ben Roethlisberger, who started the season roughly with a four-game suspension, was able to get back into the season and lead the Steelers back to the Super Bowl. Throwing for 263 yards and two touchdowns, Roethlisberger, however, also threw two interceptions, including one to Nick Collins who returned it for a touchdown.
The Packers dominated in the first two quarters and went up 21-3 at halftime, but the Steelers did not fold and by the end of the third quarter they were only down by 4 points, 21-17.
As Super Bowl veterans - having the most Super Bowl wins in the NFL with six - the Steelers had momentum on their side, but in the first play of the fourth quarter, NFL Defensive Player of the Year runner-up Clay Matthews Jr. slammed Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall to force a fumble, and the Packers took over on their own field.
Rodgers then threw for another touchdown to receiver Greg Jennings, but Roethlisberger answered with a touchdown of his own, finishing it off with a successful two-point conversion to make it a three-point game, 28-25.
After a Packers’ field goal, however, Roethlisberger’s would-be victory drive fell short at midfield, and Green Bay ran out the clock to go home with the Super Bowl victory 31-25.
The Super Bowl victory marks Green Bay’s fourth after winning the first two editions under legendary coach Vince Lombardi and Hall-of-Fame quarterback Bart Starr. In 1997, Brett Favre led the team to another Super Bowl victory. And Rodgers’ Super Bowl debut on Sunday marked the franchise’s fourth championship.
