Grant Flower quits playing cricket for coaching
January 4th, 2011 - 8:03 pm ICT by IANSHarare, Jan 4 (IANS) Zimbabwe batsman Grant Flower retired from international cricket Tuesday to devote time to his coaching commitments. The 40-year-old Flower in a statement said he wants to make way for the youngsters in the national side and concentrate on his new role of a batting coach for the national team.
“I have drawn the line. There is enough talent coming through and I do not want to hold anyone back,” said Flower in a statement released by the Zimbabwe Cricket Tuesday.
“I have had a good run and I have enjoyed it, but there is a transition from player to coach, and I think it is time to take it.”
Flower, a veteran of 221 One-day Internationals (ODI) and 67 Tests, represented Zimbabwe in the two Twenty20 matches against South Africa last year.
The compact right-hand batsman made his Test and ODI debut against India in the 1992 home series. In September 1997, he became the first Zimbabwean to score a century in each innings of a Test.
His elder brother Andy is the team director of the England cricket team.
