London, July 10 (ANI): British PM Gordon Brown has likened himself to disturbed Emily Bronte anti-hero Heathcliffe from Wuthering Heights.

Brown made the comparison in a new interview to New Statesman magazine that was meant to soften his image.

Instead, it has backfired with his political opponents getting another opportunity to mock him.

In the interview, Mr Brown says people are “absolutely correct” when they compare him to Heathcliff, reports The Telegraph.

He adds: “Well, maybe an older Heathcliff, a wiser Heathcliff.”

This had many of his opponents wondering if Brown had even read the classic.

Andrew McCarthy, the acting director of the Bronte Parsonage Museum in Yorkshire, questioned whether Mr Brown would make a good role model as a PM after making such a comment.

“Heathcliff is a man prone to domestic violence, kidnapping, possibly murder, and digging up his dead lover. He is moody and unkind to animals. Is this really a good role model for a prime minister?” he told The Daily Telegraph.

Added Vince Cable, the Lib Dem treasury spokesman: “I don”t think Gordon can have read the book. Heathcliff may be dark and brooding but he is also ruthless and vindictive. He ended his life a broken and tormented man haunted by a ghost.”

Chris Grayling the Conservative shadow cabinet minister, said: “You really have the impression now that Gordon Brown is wrapped up in the his own little world.

“It is clear that he and his ministers have been in power too long, they are out of touch, and frankly are increasingly deluded about the way that people see them. It clear we now desperately need a change.” (ANI)
