Gooch confident of Cook surpassing his record
August 19th, 2011 - 8:05 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Aug 19 (IANS) England’s batting coach Graham Gooch is confident his protege Alastair Cook will surpass him as the country’s leading Test run-scorer.
Gooch scored 8,900 from 118 Tests and Cook is 132 runs short of the 6,000-mark. He was unbeaten on 34 after the last two sessions of the opening day of the fourth Test against India were washed out.
“I’ll be absolutely delighted if someone goes past any of my records because it’ll mean England are winning cricket matches. From the time I was a captain, player and selector, I was only interested in one thing and that was England winning,” Gooch was quoted as saying in the Guardian here.
“I try to coach run-making. Not batting, but run-making. Alastair has the four attributes that make up a run-maker: he’s got a great attitude, he has great technical ability, his knowledge pool is increasing all the time and he has the No.1 attribute - he has massive powers of concentration.”
Gooch said he is proud of Cook’s career-best 294 in the last Test at Edgbaston.
“If you want to score 200 you can’t do it in an hour. You’ve got to be out there for six or seven hours. You have to play every ball singly for all that time, each ball in isolation. It doesn’t come by chance. It comes by hard work and ability, and we’re proud of him,” he said.
