Girish, Amit move up in national snooker

Akshay Kumar Chennai, Aug 3 (IANS) Ten players made it to the penultimate round of the qualifying tournament to decide the five spots in the main draw of the senior national snooker championship here Wednesday.

Among the 10 were a couple of heavyweights like Ashok Shandilya and Shyam Jagtiani, both from the Railways who are attempting to recapture their salad days.

Also in the running was their team-mate Girish Rajashekar, a pre-quarter-finalist at the 2009 World championship in Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, Amit Bhushan of Karnataka dished out one of the day’s better performances as he shrugged off a 1-2 deficit to beat Andhra’s Khizar Raoof 3-2 (65-35, 15-103, 16-59, 69-0, 70-38) and set up a clash with Girish in the fifth round to be played on later tonight.

The line-up for the pre-qualifying round is: Akshay Kumar (Del) vs Nigel Lazar (TN); Wasim Ahmed (Rlys) vs Jasim Tawin (Kar); Siddarth Parekh (Rlys) vs Mahesh Aditya (TN); D Rajkumar (Kar) vs Vipin Premi (UP); Ashok Shandilya (Rlys) vs Kabil Badami(mah).

The winners of these matches will then go into the final round of qualifying to be played Thursday morning to identify the five who will make it to the main draw.
