Gill inaugurates R.K.Khanna Tennis Complex
July 11th, 2010 - 6:14 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 11 (IANS) A refurbished R.K. Khanna Tennis complex was formally inaugurated Sunday by Sports Minister M.S.Gill for the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games.
The stadium, upgraded at Rs.65 crore and spread over 11,500 square metres, is a state-of-art facility. It has already hosted a test event — Asian junior championships — in May.
This is the first time tennis as a medal sport has been introduced in the Commonwealth Games.
The stadium will have 14 tennis courts (one centre court, one show court and 12 other courts).
Gill said he wanted to expand the facility and turn it into a national centre, for which the sports ministry has signed an agreement with All India Tennis Association (AITA) to enable the use of facilities by school and colleges.
The complex has been a tennis playing facility since 1970. The venue also hosted the tennis competition during the 1982 Asian Games.
