Gerrard rules out retiring from international football
July 4th, 2010 - 1:07 pm ICT by ANILondon, Jul 4 (ANI): England skipper Steven Gerrard has ruled out retiring from international football, and has vowed to play until at least the European Championships.
He is in line to retain the captaincy and be entrusted with guiding younger players through the next series of qualifiers.
“There’s no way I want the disappointment of the Germany game to be my last match for England,” said Gerrard.
“It was such a low, I’m determined to do as much as I can to make amends for what happened at the World Cup,” News of the World quoted him, as saying.
“I fully expect there to be a lot of changes to the next squad and it’s up to the manager whether I’m selected, but I’m going to continue to make myself available for my country,” he added.
The England squad was split over coach Fabio Capello’s leadership during the competition, but Gerrard was loyal to the Italian throughout and is happy that he is continuing as coach.
“Fabio Capello is one of the best managers in the world and is the right man to take the team forward,” he said. (ANI)
