garyJan 23, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Gary Matthews Jr. has been traded by the Los Angeles Angels to the New York Mets. The team has also paid $21.5 millions to complete the part of the bargain. The deal was sealed on Jan 22, Friday. On the other hand, the Los Angeles Angels received the right handed reliever of the New York Mets, Brian Stokes. They have also acquired the right-hander Joel Pineiro, who has signed a $16 million contract with the team, lasting for two years. They have also paid Gary Matthews Jr. an amount of $500,000.

The reason stated by the Los Angeles Angels for carting off Gary Matthews Jr. to the New York Mets is that they were unable to schedule the player to a proper playing time. Gary Matthews had signed a contract for five years, with the Los Angeles Angels, for an amount of $50 million. However, he wanted to be able to play every day, a demand that the team could not meet. Naturally, frustration grew, something that led to his final dispersion from the team altogether.

However, it is also being speculated that Gary Matthews Jr. has been traded due to the fact that he had not exactly been in the best of terms with the owner of the Los Angeles Angels, Arte Morano. Only a few days back, he had been convicted of using a human growth hormone, a grave offense in athletic circles. The deal with the New York Mets came off after they lost a player, Carlos Beltran, due to knee surgery. However, this might not be very good for the Los Angeles Angels, as without Gary Matthews Jr., there would be only one other reserve outfielder in the team.
