Gambhir scores fifty, Indian stay in hunt at 124/3 in 25 overs

Gautam Gambhir Mumbai, April 2 (IANS) Gautam Gambhir (60 not out) and Virat Kohli (35) kept India in sight of Sri Lanka’s 275-run target in the World Cup final here Saturday.

Gambhir and Kohli shared a 83-run stand to bring India in contention after the early loss of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar.

India, however, suffered a third blow in the 22nd over as Kohli (35) was superbly caught and bowled by Tillakaratne Dilshan with the score at 114 in 21.4 overs.

After 25 overs, India were 124 for three with Gambhir and MS Dhoni (2 not out) at the crease.

Sri Lanka earlier were in full control after fast bowler Lasith Malinga brought an abrupt end to Sachin Tendulkar’s World Cup campaign by sending him back for just 18 runs with the score at 31 for two in 6.1 overs.

Tendulkar, who was still waiting for his 100th international century, edged a Malinga delivery to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara to stun the capacity crowd into silence.

India lost Virender Sehwag in the first over.
