Gagan to meet Angad in finals of All India Amateur golf

Chandigarh, Jan 21 (IANS) Seasoned Gagan Verma of Delhi was one step away from his biggest title in a long amateur career as he moved into the final of the All India Amateurs Golf Saturday.

Verma beat S.K. Pappu 4-up with two play. Pappu had earlier beaten S. Chikkrangappa in the quarters.

Verma will clash with Angad Cheema in the 36-hole final Sunday. Cheema beat Syed Saqib Ahmed 1-up. Cheema won the RCGC Cup this year.

Verma, who finished third at the North India, reached the final for the first time. Back in 2000, he lost in the semi-finals, when the title was won Richard Sterne of South Africa, who is now one of the top European professionals.

Verma and Pappu were all square after nine holes. Then Verma birdied the 10th to go one-up. He birdied the 13th, missed another on the 14th when the ball lipped out. Birdies on 15th and 16th sealed the match for him and gave him a shot at the biggest amateur title in India.
