French President Sarkozy’s remarks on death of Juan Antonio Samaranch

PARIS, FRANCE (BNO NEWS) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed on Wednesday his condolences to the family of Juan Antonio Samaranch, who died on Tuesday at age 89 from a heart ailment.
Juan Antonio Samaranch, a Spanish citizen, was the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1980 to 2001, in a 21-year period, the second longest term in the history of the IOC.
Samaranch was admitted on Tuesday in a Barcelona hospital after experiencing heart difficulties. He was declared dead at 1:25 p.m.
“Mr. Samaranch is the one who favored the rise of the Olympics by opening all sports to all countries,” President Sarkozy said.
“He has contributed to continuously strengthen the unity and solidarity among international federations, national Olympic committees, and athletes, to implement the greatest world sport governance.”
