French Football Federation rejects allegation of racist quotas
April 30th, 2011 - 3:48 pm ICT by ANIParis, Apr 29(ANI): French Football Federation (FFF) President Patrick Braouezec has denied allegations that the federation’s officials have been attempting to introduce a limit on the number of players of African and Arabic descent in training centers nationwide.
Local on-line media Mediapart had reported that top FFF officials had secretly approved limiting the number of black and Arab trainees to 30 percent from the age of 12-13.
“We don’t have quotas in training centers according to the origin of people. I’m quite surprised,” Xinhua news agency quoted Braouezec, as saying.
“I do not know on what basis Mediapart said that. We have to verify and then we will respond,” he added.
Race became a sensitive issue in French football after the dire performance of the national team at last year’s World Cup in South Africa.
Controversial accusations circled in some quarters that the team, which had six black players, had mutinied in South Africa because of race. (ANI)
