Fourth win for Karnataka in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
October 20th, 2011 - 9:42 pm ICT by IANSChennai, Oct 20 (IANS) Karnataka chalked up their fourth consecutive win to take a decisive step towards winning the south zone title after defeating Hyderabad by 80 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament, here Thursday.
Skipper Robin Uthappa continued with his impressive showing as he blitzed a 36-ball 92 (8 x 4, 8 x 6) as Karnataka romped to 202 for eight and then Hyderabad were dismissed for 122 in 16.5 overs with left-arm spinner KP Appanna claiming three for 31 and seamer NC Aiyappa two for 14.
The other batsman to star for Karnataka was wicket-keeper CM Gautham who scored an unbeaten 53 (38b, 7 x 4), but it was Uthappa who hogged the limelight with a blistering attack that saw him score 50 off just 18 deliveries (4 x 4, 5 x 6), but was castled when in sight of a century.
For Hyderabad, left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha took three wickets in the 20th over, but by then, Karnataka had piled up a winning total.
Meanwhile holders and hosts Tamil Nadu notched their third win in four matches as they defeated Kerala by six wickets.
Batting first, Kerala made 159 for five after Robert Fernandez (44, 37b, 2 x 4, 2 x 6) and Rohan Prem (48, 37b, 2 x 4, 2 x 6) added 92 off 70 balls for the fourth wicket. In reply, Tamil Nadu, spearheaded by Dinesh Karthik (55, 34b, 7 x 4) reached the target in the last over.
Elsewhere, Goa beat Andhra by two wickets for their first win in a low-scoring game. Andhra, with just two points from a rain-induced No-Result, were restricted to 118 for nine and Goa just about crossed the finish line off the last ball with two wickets to spare.
