Four time Olympian Julia Mancuso breaks record for most U.S. national titles in alpine skiing
March 24th, 2010 - 3:19 am ICT by BNO NewsWILMINGTON, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – A four-time Olympian broke the record for most U.S. national titles in alpine skiing, the Olympic Regional Development Authority said Tuesday.
Julia Mancuso, 26, of Olympic Valley, California, is an alpine skier, who raced to her 11th Visa U.S. national alpine championship crown and fourth giant slalom title during Tuesday’s, March 22, final day of racing on Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, New York.
Mancuso’s victory moves her to first all-time in U.S. national titles, ahead of both Bode Miller and Andrea Mead Lawrence, who each have 10, which held the record for 55 years.
The course was condensed with thick fog, but the four-time Olympian raced to a first-run time of one minute, 03.10 seconds, more than .67-seconds ahead of the second place skier, Megan McJames of Park City, Utah. On her second run, Mancuso timed 1:04.42, concretely pushing her to a two-run time of 2:07.52, .59-seconds in front of the race’s eventual silver medalist Laurenne Ross of Klamath Falls, Oregon.
“I actually haven’t skied GS since the Olympics, so it was nice to get back on my GS skis,” said Mancuso, who won 2010 Olympic silver in the women’s downhill and bronze in the super combined. “It was foggy up there, but it wasn’t too bad, it sticks to your goggles a little bit but it was OK,” she added.
