Melbourne, Mar 27 (ANI): Former Test stars have called for Michael Clarke to be handed the one-day captaincy in the next fortnight as pressure intensifies on national selectors to inject new blood following Australia’s World Cup demise.

The first step in the blueprint for success at the next World Cup will be taken on Saturday week, when Australia plays Bangladesh in Mapur in the first of a three-match one-day series, FOX Sports reports.

There is prevailing sentiment that he is at the ideal age to inherit leadership of a one-day side that can be reinvigorated by the likes of Callum Ferguson, Tim Paine, John Hastings, Aaron Finch, Dan Christian, Steve O’Keefe, James Pattinson and Josh Hazlewood.

“It’s time for some more rebuilding. You are looking at a four-year cycle (for the 2015 World Cup) and I think it’s time to get it started. There’s some good young cricketers out there and it might just be the opportunity that they are looking for, to get a chance,” former Test captain Ian Chappell said.

Test batting great Doug Walters believed it was time for Ponting to give up to enable Clarke to stamp his imprimatur on a new-look one-day team.

“I don’t see the point in him going on as captain; there is nothing more for him to achieve. There’s some great young talent coming through. I’d like to see what they have to offer,” Walters said. (ANI)
