Former NHL Head Coach Pat Burns Dies After Losing Battle Against Cancer

patSherbrooke, Nov 20, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Pat Burns, the former NHL coach breathed his last in the presence of his friends and family at La Maison Aube-Lumiere in Sherbrooke, Quebec on Friday. His family announced the news to the media and said that they will announce the funeral dates within the next two days. Pat Burns had been fighting against colon and liver cancer since 2004 and in 2009, the doctors discovered that the cancer has spread to his lungs. The former NHL coach was 58 years of age at the time of his unfortunate demise.

Jacques Demers, who replaced Pat Burns as coach of the Montreal Canadiens in 1992 expressed his condolences and said that Pat Burns was “confrere” and it was a sad day for the “coaching fraternity”. Former Montreal Canadiens goalie Brian Hayward said that Pat Burns was better than most of the coaches. He said that he would not describe the former coach as “player’s coach” but the team has lot of respect for what he contributed to the game of hockey. National Hockey League’s Commissioner Gary Bettman said that the world will remember Pat Burns as a successful coach and his fans will remember his humor, his humanity, his courage and honesty as a person. He said that NHL mourns the unfortunate demise and sends his heartfelt condolences to deceased head coach’s friends and family.

New Jersey Devils’ President Lou Lamoriello expressed his condolences on behalf of the management, ownership, staff and players of the team and said that they are “deeply saddened” by the loss of the veteran coach. Toronto Maple Leafs’ president and general manager Brian Burke said that Pat Burns represents everything good about their game. Cliff Fletcher, Toronto Maple Leafs’ former general manager expressed his sadness at the unfortunate demise and said that Pat Burns forged a “tremendous” bond and he was not only a good “veteran” of Toronto, he was also well known among the Toronto Maple Leafs fans everywhere. Pat Burns is survived by his wife, son, daughter, son and stepson.
