Former French midfielder Tigana to coach Shanghai Shenhua
December 19th, 2011 - 4:09 pm ICT by IANSShanghai, December 19 (IANS) Former French legendary footballer Jean Amadou Tigana has signed for Shanghai Shenhua as the head coach, the Chinese Super League club announced.
The 56-year-old Frenchman, who was presented to Chinese media after he inked a contract here Sunday, said his decision to join Shenhua had nothing to do with money.
“I came here not for money,” Tigana was quoted saying by Xinhua. “It’s a choice about sport and life.”
There were media reports that Tigana’s salary will be 2.5 million euros a year.
The Frenchman had 52 caps for his national side and was part of the team that won the European Championship in 1984. He joined Michel Platini, Luis Fernandez and Alain Giresse in what was termed “the Magic Square” - one of the great midfield foursomes of all time.
He started his coaching career at French giants Lyon between 1993 and 1995, before moving to AS Monaco. He also had coaching spells in English club Fulham and Turkish side Besiktas.
