Havana, Dec 24 (IANS) Former baseball pitcher Norge Luis Vera underwent several surgeries following a traffic accident near the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, but his life is “out of danger”, the official radio station Radio Reloj reported.

Vera, 40, Olympic champion in Athens 2004, and silver medallist in Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008, was operated because of injuries in his left hip, arm and humerus.

Vera retired last September, though he recognised “that he could have played few years more”.

He never revealed the reasons for which he left the sport. He was the winner at the historical game between the Baltimore Oriols and the Cuban team 12 years ago.

His career counts with 23 victories in international events, only two defeats.

In national series, he won 176 games with 68 defeats at an average of 721. He was considered the best second Cuban pitcher in the history of the tournament, only surpassed by the former pitcher of the New York Yankees, Orlando “the Duke” Hernandez, with an average of 728.
