Football World Cup balls dominated by orange and Adidas
December 1st, 2009 - 3:10 pm ICT by ANILondon, Dec.1 (ANI): In the last 56 years, different types of balls have been used in World Cup football, and the colour orange and sports manufacturer Adidas, have dominated selection. Following is the list:
1950 An orange leather ball was used as Uruguay lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy in nearby Brazil.
1954 Neutral Switzerland were hosts as West Germany won. The ball was not neutral, it was orange.
1958 Brazil stormed to victory in Sweden with - yes, you’ve guessed it - a standard orange ball.
1962 The official ball remained orange as Brazil retained the trophy in Chile, seeing off Czechoslovakia.
1966 England’s greatest footballing moment as Geoff Hurst hit his Wembley hattrick with an orange ball.
1970 With the advent of colour TV, the World Cup was played with a black and white Adidas Telstar ball.
1974 Same design, new name - the Adidas Telstar Durlast Special Addition was used in West Germany.
1978 Hosts Argentina danced their way to World Cup glory with an Adidas Tango Rosario ball.
1982 Adidas created the Tango Espana ball for the finals in Spain, won by Italy and six-goal Paulo Rossi.
1986 Diego Maradona got his Hand of God on the Adidas Azteca to help Argentina triumph in Mexico.
1990 Gazza’s tears could not wash away the black trim on the white Adidas Unico ball used in Italy.
1994 The United States hosted their first World Cup finals, which introduced the Adidas Questra ball.
1998 The Adidas tricolore ball in red, white and blue was used across the Channel in France.
2002 South Korea and Japan hosted the finals using the Adidas Fevernova silvery gold ball.
2006 Adidas were again the providers for Germany - their Matchball was white, gold and black. (ANI)
