Flower denies ’slow’ Trott behind England’s World Cup quarterfinal exit

London, Mar 28(ANI): England manager Andy Flower has rebutted suggestions that Jonathan Trott, who was the team’s leading run-scorer in the World Cup, had scored too slowly in their quarterfinal against Sri Lanka.

Trott had scored 86 off 115 balls, but it failed to prevent his team’s 10-wicket defeat in Saturday’s quarterfinal at Colombo’s R.Premadasa Stadium.

When asked if Trott had been the cause of England’s tentative display, which left them 30 runs below their initial target, Flower said: “No, I wouldn’t say that at all. That is not where our batting has failed. We can’t point to Jonathan Trott.”

Flower insisted that the 29-year-old batted outstandingly well and was a really solid anchor around which England could have performed.

“I think he’s been superb. It’s the men around him who haven’t delivered sufficiently. In saying that I would add, and he’s aware of this, there are times in the middle or towards the end of an innings when he can be a little more aggressive and take control of the situation a little more than he has done,” the Guardian quoted Flower, as saying.

“He will acknowledge that and that’s an area he can improve, but his consistency and skill in the way he’s dealt with these conditions have been outstanding,” he added. (ANI)
