Fletcher took being miserable to a new level: Veterans

London, Apr. 28 (ANI): Veteran cricketers who have known or interacted with newly appointed Indian cricket team coach Duncan Fletcher, have said that he will have to work on his interactive skills.

At least three of them have said that he is media shy, and has the potential of taking misery to a new level when he has had to engage with journalists.

“If you’re the face of English cricket dealing with the media (which Fletcher was from 1999 to 2007), then you ought to be showing a bit of a smile and enjoyment and he never did,” the Telegraph quoted former England opener Geoff Boycott, as saying.

Former all-rounder Ian Botham said: “England were going nowhere. There was no communication, and at times, I think, Duncan took being miserable to a new level.”

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan said: “Great coach who will work well with [India captain Mahendra Singh] Dhoni [and] all the talent. His biggest challenge will come from the media. He has never really understood how it works!”

Vaughan added: “He shares some similarities to Gary Kirsten and that obviously is something India would like to maintain, but he also has had greater experience, which should be useful for the phase the Indian team are about to enter into.”

John Buchanan, former Australian coach, said: “I am sure he will bring in some fresh ideas to the team like he did during his English stint. But I think coaching the No.1 team in the world will be a real challenge for Fletcher.”

Current Indian bowling coach Eric Simons said: “I’ve got no hard feelings between Duncan and me. There were a few a few months ago, but there’s none now.”

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting said:”The key to Fletcher’s success here will lie in whether he is willing to embrace the country. Everything else follows.” (ANI)
