Fletcher to bring Penney on board as India’s fielding coach
May 24th, 2011 - 8:10 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, May 24 (IANS) India’s newly-appointed cricket coach Duncan Fletcher is likely to bring in Trevor Penney on board as fielding coach.
The 42-year-old Penney, a former Sri Lanka assistant coach, will be joining the team for the West Indies tour that starts June 4, it is learnt.
A top board official told IANS that Penney, originally from Zimbabwe but now a naturalised English citizen, will fill the post that was left vacant for the last two years.
“We didn’t have a permanent fielding coach after Robin Singh, whose contract was not renewed after 2008. Penney is a reputed coach and we think he will do a good job,” the official said on the condition of anonymity.
“Fletcher was given a free hand in picking his support staff. We have full faith on Fletcher,” the official added.
Penney had worked with Fletcher for a short term with the England team in 2005 and then moved to Sri Lanka to be Tom Moody’s assistant.
Penney has been an excellent fielder during his 17-year playing career with English county Warwickshire.
