Wellington, June 6 (IANS) New Zealand cricket stalwarts Stephen Fleming and Daniel Vettori were Monday awarded the country’s highest civil honours to mark the birthday of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Fleming, who most recently led Chennai Superkings to its second successive triumph in the Indian Premier League, and Vettori, who captained the Royal Challengers Bangalore, were made Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Vettori succeeded Fleming as captain of the national side in 2007.

Fleming is New Zealand’s most successful and longest serving captain with 28 victories to his name. He captained the side in 80 Tests and 218 One-day Internationals and is also the most capped Test player with 111 appearances. The stylish left-hand batsman has scored 7,172 runs in Tests, the most by a New Zealander.

Vettori, at 18, became the youngest New Zealand cricketer to make his Test debut. With 282 scalps, he is the leading wicket-taker for the Black Caps in One-day Internationals and his 345 wickets in Tests are only second to Sir Richard Hadlee’s 431 in Tests.
