Five hurt as Green Park stadium wall collapses
October 22nd, 2010 - 6:57 pm ICT by IANSKanpur, Oct 22 (IANS) At least five people, including a minor, were injured and several vehicles were damaged when the high boundary wall of the famous Green Park cricket stadium that is the venue of international matches collapsed here Friday, police said.
“It appears that the boundary wall was dilapidated and therefore collapsed. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the accident,” police inspector D.K. Sharma told reporters.
Lcals alleged that they had asked the stadium authorities several times to get the 60-year-old stadium walls renovated, but to no avail.
When contacted Regional Sports Officer (RSO) Bula Ganguly told IANS: “It’s true the wall was in dilapidated state. We have already submitted the estimate for the renovation of the boundary wall with the state government and hope the construction work would be taken up soon.”
According to stadium officials, the wall was built in 1952.
