Ferguson backs Rooney to end goal drought

Alex Ferguson London, Aug 20(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed his striker Wayne Rooney to end his 13-match goal drought during Sunday’s Premier League clash against Fulham.

Rooney has not scored since United’s Champions League tie against Bayern Munich on March 30. He has spent 1,076 minutes on the field without scoring a goal.

However, Ferguson said: “Wayne is one of the best strikers in the world. He is still young, still progressing and still learning.”"When players get to 26 or 27, that’s when you start to see a mature player who is edging towards the peak of his powers. I hope we see that with Wayne,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

Meanwhile, United’s first-team coach Rene Meulensteen insisted that the striker has no psychological problems relating to the disappointing World Cup in South Africa.

“It is not in his head, it is not a mental thing. There is no problem about that. He is a fighter and will get back on top. He set a benchmark last season with 34 goals so if we provide the ammunition, he will go on a roll again,” Meulensteen said.

“This has all come from England’s massive disappointment. They didn’t live up to expectations, including Wayne. The task is to get him up to speed. And we will. Just because you have a bad World Cup, you don’t turn into a bad player,” he added.
