Ferdinand to play on for England despite Capello’s captaincy snub
March 22nd, 2011 - 2:22 pm ICT by ANILondon, Mar 22(ANI): Rio Ferdinand is still available for England duty despite controversially losing the captaincy, according to a source close to the player.
It was earlier reported that Ferdinand, who has a long-term injury, was appalled by manager Fabio Capello’s decision and was considering his international future.
“Rio will never turn his back on England. He loves playing for his country and Fabio Capello cannot change that,” the BBC quoted the source, as saying.
Capello has reinstated John Terry as the captain of the national team.
Terry was relieved of his duties in February 2010 after reports surfaced that he had an affair with the former partner of England teammate Wayne Bridge.
Capello had planned to meet Ferdinand at Old Trafford to explain his decision last Wednesday.
The Italian later told a media briefing at the Football Association’s HQ at Wembley Stadium that Ferdinand “preferred not to meet me”. (ANI)
