Feeble West Indies top-order flattened in third Test (Lunch report)

Roseau (Dominica), July 6 (IANS/CMC) The West Indies’ feeble top-order batting was again undermined by Ishant Sharma as they were 64 for three at lunch on day one of the third and final cricket Test against India here Wednesday.

At the interval, Darren Bravo was batting on 17 while Shivnarine Chanderpaul, making his 133rd Test appearance, was at the other end at 11.

Sharma, the most successful of all bowlers in the series, has so far taken two wickets for 23 runs from eight overs, carrying his series aggregate to 18.

The hosts’ decision to give left-hander Kieran Powell and middle-order batsman Kirk Edwards their Test debuts failed to infuse any confidence in the batting, and the West Indies sunk to 35 for three in 17 overs.

Powell was caught at second slip off Praveen Kumar for three while Edwards was declared caught behind for six while attempting a hook on a short rising delivery, but TV replays suggested the ball ricocheted from his helmet.

In between, Adrian Barath was bowled for 12, dragging a short ball from Sharma onto his stumps off the glove.

India brought in Munaf Patel to replace fast-medium bowler Abhimanyu Mithun.

The West Indies made two changes, including Powell and Edwards, after dropping Lendl Simmons and Ramnaresh Sarwan.

West Indies trail 0-1 in the three-match series, after they lost the first Test by 63 runs in four days at Sabina Park in Jamaica, and earned a draw in the second Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Windsor Park is staging a Test for the first time. It is the 12th venue in the Caribbean to have that privilege, and 106th globally.
