Federer in Kooyong Classic tennis finalJanuary 15th, 2009 - 9:41 pm ICT by IANS
Melbourne, Jan 15 (IANS) Swiss star and World No. 2 Roger Federer overcame a stiff resistance from Spaniard Fernando Verdasco to scrape through the final of the Kooyong Classic. It took Federer two hours and 14 minutes to prevail over the Spaniard 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-5).
Federer was cruising ahead 5-0 in the opening set before the 15th-ranked Verdasco hit back.
The US Open champion was plagued by unforced errors and careless returns into an open court, allowing Verdasco to climb back into the match and draw level in the second set.
The Spaniard then matched Federer to send the deciding set into a tiebreaker where Federer quickly ran up a 5-1 lead and at 6-2 held four match points.
But Verdasco proved stubborn and managed to save three before the Swiss sent down an ace on his fourth to seal the match.
Federer now faces the winner of the clash between Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka and Chilean Fernando Gonzales, who play Friday.
