Fatehdeep to meet Karan in U-16 tennis nationals

New Delhi, Oct 21 (IANS) Second seed Fatehdeep Singh and Karan Salwan will square off in the U-16 boys’ finals while second seed Simran Sethi will clash with Tarannum Handa in the girls category of the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship for Juniors.

Chandigarh’s Fatehdeep, overcame a second-set lapse, to defeat third-seeded Jude Raymond 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. In contrast, Karan had it easy against Deepak Vishwakarma, winning 6-2, 6-2.

In the first girls semi-finals, Delhi girl Simran powered her way into the finals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over 12th seeded Teertha Iska.

Nayanika Reddy, battling a sore ankle, went down 3-6, 2-6 against 10th seed Tarranum in the second semi-final.

Nayanika had ousted top seed Snehadevi Reddy Thursday.

In the doubles, Karan Salwan and Dhruv Agarwal defeated Gagan Sharma and Deepak Vishwakarma 6-0,7-5 to claim the under-16 title while Snehadevi Reddy and Dhruti Venu Gopal defeated Amita Pandey and Simran K Sethi by 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 for the girls’ title.

In the under-14 boys’ singles, top seed Sachin Kumar overwhelmed BR Nikshep 6-1, 6-3 to set up a title clash with Dhruv Pal who had to fight hard against Vishu Prasad before winning 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

In the under-14 girls finals, Nayanika will like to make up for her under-16 loss when she takes on Pranjala Yadlapalli in the final. Nayanika defeated Vanshika Sawhney 6-1, 6-2, while Pranjala overcame a stiff challenge from Akshara Iska to win the semi-final match 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
