Fans looking to Sehwag to turn things around for Daredevils

Gautam Gambhir New Delhi, April 19 (IANS) Just as Gautam Gambhir’s Kolkata Knight Riders brought the crowds back to the Eden Gardens with a string of victories in the Indian Premier League, Delhi Daredevils’ fans are hoping Virender Sehwag performs similarly at the Ferozeshah Kotla.

The 44,000-seater Kotla failed to see a full house Tuesday when Daredevils played their second game at home. There were 34,000 spectators when they lost the first match to Mumbai Indians by eight wickets and Tuesday the turnstiles registered 32,000 when they lost to Deccan Chargers by 16 runs.

Daredevils are looking up to their star player Sehwag to inspire confidence in fans in the remaining five home matches by turning things around and also bring back some smiles on the faces of franchisee GMR, who reportedly lost a couple of crores in gate receipts during the two games.

A top GMR official told IANS that they have failed to achieve the target of Rs.4 crores per match in gate collections.

“In the first match we lost Rs.1 crore and today also we will suffer similar losses. It is a matter of concern for the team. But once the team starts winning I think we will achieve our target,” the official said.

When franchises are still struggling to break even, GMR is hoping that Sehwag emerges as the star performer for the Delhi team.

“This is a crucial year for all the franchises. And we hope if Sehwag comes good the crowd will fill the Kotla to its brim,” the official said.

Daredevils’ fans also share the same feelings. The crowd chanted “Sehwag, Sehwag” but the dashing batsman disappointed as he was out for 12 runs.

“I think Sehwag needs to do what Gautam (another Delhi boy) did for Kolkata Knight Riders. In IPL fans want to see the old Sehwag to smash the bowlers to all parts of the ground,” a fan said.
