Johannesburg, July 11(ANI): Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas has said that he is desperate to play in Sunday’s World Cup final against the Netherlands at Johannesburg’s Soccer City.
“I’m so proud Spain is in the World Cup final, but it means nothing if we don’t win it. I am desperate to play at least some part in tomorrow’s game,” Fabregas wrote in an article for The Sun.
“Of course I believe I can play a part in making history for our country, which has never won a World Cup before,” he added.
Fabregas said that representing his country was the ultimate honour for him, and to do it at the World Cup would be unbeatable.
“What player on the planet wouldn’t be? It’s everything we dream of from the moment we start kicking a ball to the moment we learn all about the world’s greatest football tournament,” Fabregas said.
“Because that’s exactly what the World Cup is. Yes, we all want to win the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Champions League and all the other big tournaments,” he added.
The 23-year-old further admitted that he was hurt at not being included in Spain’s starting line-ups throughout the tournament.
“If I’m lucky enough to get a start. I will give everything I have, but if I have to start on the bench, then so be it. All I can pray for is that I get a chance to play some part of this unbelievable game,” Fabregas said.
“We’re all aware that we are following in the footsteps of the game’s legends - players who wanted just as badly as me to get their hands on that trophy,” he added.
Reigning European champions, Spain, have so far lost only one game in the tournament.
They lost their opening Group stage match 1-0 to Switzerland, and then registered wins over Honduras (2-1) and Chile (2-1). In the Round of 16 they accounted for Portugal 1-0, before beating Paraguay 1-0 in the quarterfinals and Germany 1-0 in the semis. (ANI)
