Ex Oz pacer Hogg tells Brett Lee to give up Baggy Green

Melbourne, Nov. 22 (ANI): Former Australian Test quick Rodney Hogg has urged Brett Lee to give his Baggy Green and retire from Test cricket in a bid to spearhead Australia’s World Cup campaign in 2011.

While Lee is not convinced his illustrious Test career (310 wickets at 30.82) is over, Hogg says Lee, 33, must bite the bullet and put his energies into the game’s shorter forms.

“Brett Lee should just retire from Test cricket. There’s been examples of guys who stood down from one form of the game to prolong their careers. Steve Waugh and Shane Warne played less one-day cricket to extend their Test careers. Brett’s body looks like it’s going to pack it in with the longer form of the game, so he should just retire from the Test arena,” The Herald Sun quoted Hogg, as saying.

“We shouldn’t wait for Brett to tell us, Cricket Australia should be telling him. The amount of pressure that’s on his elbow means he can’t come back and bowl in a five-day game. He’s had a fabulous Test career, but he should focus on one-day cricket and Twenty20,” he added.

Former Test quick Bruce Reid believes Lee must not be lost to the Test arena, saying the New South Welshman is crucial to Mitchell Johnson’s development.

“If I was the national selector, I’d be trying to encourage him to play at least one more Aussie season and possibly another tour somewhere. Brett is as important as anyone in Australian cricket at the moment,” Reid said. (ANI)
